The Questionnaire
So who are you then, and what do you do?
I'm Phil Hester. I've been writing and drawing comics for about twenty years. I am currently the writer of Top Cow's The Darkness.
What have you done that I might recognise?
I've drawn long runs on Green Arrow written by Kevin Smith, Brad Meltzer and
Judd Winick, and Swamp Thing with Mark Millar. Most recently I pencilled Robert Kirkman's The Irredeemable Ant-Man. My pencilling career stretches back to my college days and includes assignments for most every publisher great and small.
I've written The Coffin, Deep Sleeper, Firebreather and Antoine Sharpe: The Atheist, and Thirteen Steps for Oni, Image, and Desperado respectively.
I wrote and drew The Wretch, which earned an Eisner nomination in the late nineties.
What have you done that I don't know about?
I appeared on the American TV series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and helped design and build a super-hero room for a family who had lost their home to a fire.
I've written and drawn numerous, creepy short stories for Taboo, Negative Burn, and Deadline USA.
I designed the stained glass windows for the church my family attends.
Tell me something you have not told anyone else.
I want to grow my hair long again, like it was when I was a teenager, but am too obese to get away with it.
Chocolate or Chips?
Why "or"?
What word do you think is underused?
"Yes".
What book do you wish you had worked on?
Ragman.
What book do you think would have been better if you had worked on it?
I can't answer that without slighting the artist who did the book. I'm sorry.
Are you underpaid or overrated?
Again, why "or"?
JLA or Avengers?
Avengers.
Thanos or Darkseid?
Thanos IS Darkseid, so Darkseid.
Judge Dredd or Hellboy?
I loves me some Judge Dredd, but it's Hellboy by a nose.
The Darkness or Shadowman?
The Darkness, baby!
Are your choices influenced by your current employer?
No.
If you could be involved in telling a story featuring any two characters, who would they be?
Galactus and the Silver Surfer.
If you were a sandwich, what would your filling be?
Bacon. Possibly egg salad.
Can you get me a job?
I can barely get myself a job.
Save the world or rule the galaxy?
Save anything over rule anything.
One thing that annoys you about comic fans? (Only one please!!)
Nothing about comic fans in particular, but internet forums can sometimes make fans of any entertainment more strident or discourteous than they would be in any normal conversation. Fortuneately, this only applies to a tiny fraction of comic book fans, who tend to be genuinely sweet folk. I would hope that comic book fans understand that all the pros they both love and hate are also fans.(Yea God's, heres hoping he stays away from our forum!!! Cap O)
CGC - blessing or curse?
Curse? I don't own anything worth slabbing, so I'm not the best person to ask.
Who sent this to you and do you like them or merely tolerate them?
Filip Sabik, my master at Top Cow. I love him like ice cream.
Who are you going to send this on to and do you think they will reply?
I won't be forwarding this, but I did enjoy it.
Any words of wisdom before you go?
Be sweet!
Thank you and goodnight!
