Morning Glories: Volume 1

Morning-Glories

OK, I’d never even heard of this book before I was handed it by my local comic book store owner and told it was right up my street, and from the front cover depicting smiling prep-school students, I have to say I was very apprehensive. But the guy has never led me wrong yet, so I thought I’d give it a go.

This book starts out with the weird, and then just keeps heaping the weird on top! Throwing bits of mystery, horror, and funny into the mixture as we go along. Every few pages or so I found myself uttering “wait… what?” as the story got deeper and more confusing, but at no point did I lose interest.

The main characters are all varied and work well, the “villains” all do their jobs at making you dislike them for being nasty, evil people, and there is one character who wanders into the story every now and then who you just sit there going “TELL ME MORE ABOUT THAT GUY!” every time you see them.

The art is fantastic in this book too, ridiculously clean and bright, with some great tricks and effects when needed. (I especially like the use of a red tinted overlay during a particularly brutal scene).

Overall I’d recommend this for anyone who fancies a little bit of mystery horror in their reading schedule.

A warranted review by Warrick.
