Heroes for Hire #1

Heroes-For-Hire-1-001

I have to admit, I grabbed this issue mostly because Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were involved.

I’ve always liked Heroes for Hire, a long time fan both Luke Cage and Iron Fist, who do not appear in this book? So why buy it? Its not like the last incarnation of this title inspired confidence is it??

Well like I said Dan & Andy.

I’ve always liked the Idea of street heroes being driven by profit, a title dubbed and a title “Heroes for Hire.” says in all, it takes a special individual not to resort to crime when gifted with power and poor, and that’s what Luke Cage and Danny Rand did in the seventies, lets not forget that Kurt Busiek cut his teeth on this title.

That said, this is a completely different soup in a completely different kitchen with Misty Knight putting heroes like Flacon, Black Widow, Moon Knight, Elektra, and Paladin, with the promise of Ghost Rider, Silver Sable, Punisher, and Iron Fist in the right place at the right time from a secret control centre (all for an instant electronic payment) in an almost Oracle fashion.

What makes this book was not the fact that it was a fast paced action comic, not even that the constant verity of heroes on offer makes the possibilities endless, or even that the art was really nice and well suited to the book.

It was more than that, it has a really nice twist that I for one didn’t see coming and intrigued me enough to want to real the second issue and the third….fourth. Get the picture. And that my friend is something which is sadly missing from first issue comics today.

Not only do Abnett and Lanning grab your attention with this first issue they kick ass while doing it with style.
it’s more than a flashy crime story with super heroic snippets and superpowered subplots.

Abnett and Lanning have blown us away with ”Guardians of the Galaxy,” providing us with a critically-acclaimed comic that starred a whole bunch of forgotten characters who evolved into fan favourites.

It makes sense to have the prolific duo try their craft at Marvel’s collection of former Knights and some other “street level” heroes. It's not that odd an assortment of characters, many of whom have tried more than once to hold onto an ongoing series of his or her own, with good story telling and good art this combination of heroes should draw in a large number of comic buyers.

If not and they buy the latest Miller world stuff instead then there just isn’t any justice in the world.
We give it a Superior rating of 9-10.

Another fantastic well mannered review by your very own well mannered boy.
