THREE IDW COMICS I WASN’T GOING TO BUY, BUT DID ANYWAY.

Review by The Canterbury Wanderer

I was curious about these comics, but my wallet said I shouldn’t. It was a slow week, so I ended up buying “The Life & Times Of Saviour 28” #1, which is yet another superhero title exploring a world where there are a few actual superheroes, and they’ve all pretty much gone wrong. While the story is good, the choice of artist seems, um, wrong? It’s very cartoony, and while the cover suggests it might be a nice bit of Jim Baikie-esque business (he did good on “The New Statesmen”), I just thought a different artist might have given the book a greater impact. Some of it works ok, and there’s a good end to the first chapter, but that art….

I also bought “Dr Who: The Whispering Gallery”. When I first found Ben Templesmith’s art, I fell in love with it, especially on “Fell”, his over the top splurges on Wormwood left me a bit bored. I’m pleased to say that the art here is restrained and the Doctor and Martha actually look like they do in the show. Moore & Reppion have totally nailed David Tennant’s way of speaking, and it’s a neat little self contained story that makes you wonder why there isn’t more Dr Who stuff done by teams of this calibre.

I’m a Buffy and Angel nerd, but instead of just doing more spin offs and miniseries, I wish IDW would actually just concentrate on the main Angel book. Issue 1 of “Blood & Trenches” (yes, bit of a dodgy title) is written and drawn by John Byrne. The last time I saw some of his art it made me cringe, but this black and white work is actually not bad, but at the same time the style still seems quite dated, though the fact that the story is set in WW1 might excuse this. Anyway, not a bad read, but as I know it won’t have any effect on the regular storyline, I’m not that fussed.

The winner? Dr Who. Go on, splash out three quid.

A Whatever Comics Footnote:

A huge Thank You to Mark for these unprompted reviews, having read though them I would like to add my two pennies worth.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments on the Doctor Who comic,

to often licensed comics seem to be just churned out with no degree of quality in mind, this one shot shows that this doesn’t have to be the case,

it’s a superb oneshot story which really does the Doctor justice, it has forced me to break a habit of a life time, as I now own a Doctor Who comic. Absolutely super stuff and gets a Whatever Comics rateing of 10/10
